Kintrishi Protected Areas
Located in Ajara’s Kobuleti Municipality, the Kintrishi Protected Areas extend along the Kintrishi River valley between the village of Tskhemvani and the Khino Mountains, at elevations ranging from 300 to 2,500 meters above sea level. The protected area includes the Kintrishi Nature Reserve, established in 1959, and the Kintrishi Protected Landscape, created in 2007.
The reserve was established to protect the Colchian-type flora and fauna dating back to the Tertiary period. It is characterized by an exceptionally humid climate, mountainous terrain, and diverse landscapes.
The Kintrishi Protected Areas are included in the UNESCO World Natural Heritage List.
Visitors can obtain comprehensive information about the reserve at the Visitor Center. The most popular routes within the protected area are the one-day hiking and horseback-riding trail “Queen Tamar’s Arched Bridge” and the two-day hiking and horseback-riding trail “Utkhovari and Lake Tbikeli”.
Among Georgia’s protected areas, Kintrishi is distinguished by one of the largest forest-covered territories, rich in Colchian vegetation, shrubs, and ferns. The fauna includes brown bears, while wolves and lynxes are encountered more rarely. Visitors may also see foxes, badgers, hares, forest cats, and many other species. The rivers are rich in trout.
Ancient ruins, historic bridges, and temples located within the protected area take visitors on a journey into the past, while their walls tell stories of Georgian culture, architecture, and history.
Whether you spend one or two days in the Kintrishi Protected Areas enjoying a picnic, hiking, or horseback riding, exploring this remarkable destination will leave you with unforgettable memories.
