Birdwatching
Ajara is one of the world's premier destinations for birdwatching. The region lies along the East Black Sea Flyway, one of the most important migration corridors connecting Europe, Asia, and Africa. Thanks to its unique geographical location, diverse topography, and favorable climate, more than 1 million migratory birds of prey pass over Ajara every year, particularly between mid-August and mid-October.
More than 300 bird species have been recorded in the region, including over 35 species of raptors. Visitors have the opportunity to observe hawks, eagles, falcons, buzzards, harriers, and many other rare species. The most popular observation sites are Sakhalvasho, Shuamta, and the Chorokhi Delta, where specially designed observation platforms and experienced guides provide excellent birdwatching opportunities.
Ajara is recognized as the third-largest migration corridor for birds of prey in the world, following the United States and Israel, making it a renowned destination for ornithologists, wildlife photographers, and nature enthusiasts.
Since 2012, Ajara has hosted the International Birdwatching Festival every year during the first half of September. As part of the festival, visitors can observe one of the world's most spectacular natural phenomena from specially equipped observation platforms using binoculars and telescopes under the guidance of experienced ornithologists. Birdwatching in Ajara offers a unique opportunity to combine nature, science, and ecotourism in one unforgettable experience.
