Ajara is one of Georgia’s most diverse and impressive regions for lovers of active and ecotourism. Here, the sea and mountains create a unique natural environment where travelers can discover untouched forests, alpine meadows, waterfalls, lakes, historic bridges, ancient fortresses, and local cultural heritage.

The region’s protected areas are among its most remarkable attractions. Ajara is home to four protected areas, three of which, Mtirala National Park, Kintrishi Protected Areas, and Kobuleti Protected Areas, are part of the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site. These areas are distinguished by unique ecosystems, Colchian forests, and rare species of flora and fauna. The fourth park, Machakhela National Park, is home to the popular hiking trail “Machakhela Gun Route”, where visitors can also see the monument dedicated to the famous “Machakhela” gun.

In addition to the national parks, various municipalities of Ajara offer visitors marked hiking and adventure routes of different difficulty levels and durations. The trails pass through mountain gorges, forests, alpine zones, and highland villages, allowing travelers to discover the region’s natural and cultural diversity. Along the routes, visitors can see impressive waterfalls, alpine lakes, panoramic views, historic arched bridges, traditional wooden houses, and the centuries-old way of life preserved by the local population.

Ajara offers both one-day and multi-day marked routes designed for beginners as well as experienced hikers. During multi-day hikes, visitors have the opportunity to spend the night in local guesthouses, experience the hospitality of mountainous Ajara, taste traditional dishes, and learn about local culture. Those wishing to stay even closer to nature can pitch a tent in designated camping areas and spend the night under a sky filled with stars.
