In 2023, Batumi is set to host the award ceremony of one of the most prestigious tourism awards, the "World Travel Awards." Ajara will be the venue for the European gala ceremony of this event, often referred to as the Oscars of the tourism world. As part of the event, Batumi will be visited by leading companies in the tourism industry, hotels, travel agencies, business and state organizations, as well as representatives of international media from various countries around the globe.

Batumi's role as the host city of the World Travel Awards in 2023 is featured in all marketing campaigns carried out by the organization. Batumi will be recognized as a European partner at all World Travel Awards ceremonies held on other continents besides Europe.

The World Travel Awards has been held since 1993 as a ceremony to recognize and reward the best in all key sectors of the travel, tourism, and hospitality industries. Hundreds of nominations and thousands of nominees are split into different categories based on continents and countries. Among them are leading hotels, travel agencies, tourist attractions, destinations, tour operators, as well as sea, road, and air transportation companies. Today, the World Travel Awards brand is globally recognized as an opportunity to identify outstanding representatives of the tourism industry.

Each year, the World Travel Awards gala awards events span the globe to acknowledge the best of each continent. The winners then compete against each other in the grand final.

The World Travel Awards gala ceremonies are considered milestone events in the travel calendar, attended by key decision-makers from the tourism industry and international media. The program, its winners, and its sponsors receive global recognition on social media.

As for Batumi, the host of the 2023 event, it won its first tourism "Oscar" as a leading, rapidly evolving tourist destination in 2019. The winner of the World Travel Awards was revealed on the island of Madeira in Portugal. Batumi's competitors were Sofia (Bulgaria), Matera (Italy), Baku (Azerbaijan), Ljubljana (Slovenia), Kutna Hora (Czech Republic), Mostar (Bosnia-Herzegovina), and Derry (Northern Ireland). In 2020, this extraordinary city managed to retain the award, despite the official ceremonies being held online due to the pandemic.

In 2022, following Europe, Batumi was nominated as the world's fastest-growing tourist destination. To win the prestigious "World Travel Awards" award, Batumi had to compete with tourist cities from France, Japan, Colombia, Mexico, Laos, Uruguay, Bulgaria, and Northern Ireland, but Batumi emerged victorious.

Batumi's international journey, which began in 2019, will reach its zenith in September 2023, when the finest representatives of the hospitality industry from across Europe will descend upon Batumi.
