Tsikhiskeli-Vartsikhe Complex

Hidden amidst lush forests and greenery lies Tsikhiskeli, a well-preserved historical monument that stands as a testament to Khulo's rich cultural heritage. This ancient castle is situated in the village of Tsikhisdziri, within the picturesque valley of the Skhalta River.

Architectural evidence suggests that Tsikhiskeli dates back to the 12th or 13th century. Although it served its purpose for many years, the castle was ultimately left in ruins following the Ottoman invasion.

Like many other castles in Ajara, Tsikhiskeli was built with a strategic purpose in mind. Perched on a mountainside, it offers clear views of the surrounding roads, the Skhaltistskali Valley, and the Arsian and Shavsheti mountain ranges. This strategic positioning not only allowed for effective defense but also facilitated communication between neighboring castles. In times of danger, signals were sent from one fortress to another, ensuring a response to any threats.
