Khikhani Fortress

If you are a history enthusiast and a admirer of old architecture, you should visit one of Ajara's premier attractions, Khikhani Castle. Situated in the Tkhilvana village within the Khulo municipality, the castle stands proudly at the source of the Skhalta River. Perched atop a steep rock slope, it reaches an impressive elevation of 2635 meters above sea level. The castle is believed to have been constructed during the 12th or 13th century.

Today, visitors can explore the castle's remains, including its ramparts, towers, and church. Khikhani Castle primarily served military and defensive purposes, offering refuge to Georgian nobles during enemy invasions.

Excavations within the castle have unearthed a variety of intriguing artifacts, such as five pitchers discovered in a rectangular structure believed to be the castle's former cellar. Constructed from stone and brick, the site also features the foundation remains of a church dedicated to St. George, as well as a bakery and various other remnants.
