Nigazeuli Selim Khimshiashvili Museum
Selim Khimshiashvili Museum in Nigazeuli
Located within the Shuakhevi municipality, the Selim Khimshiashvili Museum offers visitors a unique glimpse into local history. Established in 2003 in the village of Nigazeuli, this fascinating museum is housed within a six-walled, 19th-century fortress, adding an extra layer of intrigue to it.
The museum's primary exhibits showcase photographs, household items, military weapons, records, publications, books, and printed materials highlighting the history and influence of the Khimshiashvili clan. Notably, the collection explores the relocation of Zemo Ajara's administrative and governance center to Nigazeuli. During this time, construction began on the Nigazeuli fortress-wall atop Bedeni Ser, where a stunning palace was eventually erected.
Selim Khimshiashvili, for whom the museum is named, completed the fortress-wall construction that his father had initiated. Today, this historic structure houses the museum's invaluable collection.
The Khimshiashvili family's legacy is deeply intertwined with Nigazeuli's history, making the village a significant participant in Georgia's broader narrative.
