Skhalta Monastery

The religious and historical monastery of Skhalti is located in the village of Kinchauri in Khulo municipality. It is the center of the Diocese of Skhalti and is a monument of great importance, which occupies an honorable place among the monuments of Georgian architecture.

Skhalti Fathers' Monastery includes both a church and a small church, a cellar and tombs. Its main temple is a large building with gates. The monument reached us with severe injuries. Most parts of the walls have missing stones. The temple has been restored many times.

There are different versions of the probable date of construction of the temple, but mostly it is connected with the era of King Tamar and dates back to the 12th century. According to the legend of the monastery, the builder ended his life because he could not accurately count the number of stones. According to legend, King Tamar took refuge here from the invasion of hordes.
