Kobuleti Protected Areas

Kobulei protected area 3.jpg

Ajara is a land of remarkable natural diversity, where the sea meets alpine mountains, valleys, and highland pastures. Among its treasures are four protected areas, a national park, and two botanical gardens—each offering a unique glimpse into the region’s ecological richness. One of these gems is the Kobuleti Protected Area, located in the northeastern part of the Kobuleti Seaside Park, just 300 meters from the lush pine-forested eco-coast. At its heart lies the Ispani peat bog, a rare and delicate ecosystem recognized as a natural treasure of the world, shaping the distinctive climate of Kobuleti.

The Kobuleti Protected Area encompasses the Kobuleti State Reserve as well as reserves along the left and right banks of the Shavi Ghele River. Established in 1998, it serves as a sanctuary for waterfowl, preserving unique species and providing critical habitats for nesting, wintering, and migratory birds. Rich wetland ecosystems, ancient forests, and incredible biodiversity led to its inclusion in the UNESCO World Natural Heritage List in 2021 as part of the Colchis Tropical Forests and Wetlands.

Among its many natural wonders are the sphagnum peat bogs of Ispani 1 and Ispani 2, which double as educational and scientific routes. Adventurous visitors can even try swamp skiing here. There are three gentle hiking trails—“Ispani 2,” “Tetri Khavsi,” and “Drozera”—perfect for discovering the area’s hidden treasures. Along the way, hikers may spot yellow and white grebes, four-meter domes of pristine white moss, carnivorous sundew plants, and even marsh turtles. Birdwatchers, in particular, find the Kobuleti Protected Area irresistible, especially during migration season, when you can hire a guide to help you enjoy the breathtaking spectacle of birds in flight.

A wooden walking path winds through the Ispani peat bog, forming a circular trail that allows visitors to immerse themselves in the beauty of this ecological marvel. Every step here is a chance to connect with one of Georgia’s most unique natural treasures.
