Chkheri Antient Arched Bridge
Chkheri Antient Arched Bridge
Among the many arched bridges in the region, the Chkheri Bridge stands out as a remarkable example. Located in Khelvachauri municipality, in the village of Zeda Chkhutuneti, this bridge spans the Chkheristskali River.
What sets the Chkheri Bridge apart from other bridges like the Mirveti and Makho is not its craftsmanship, but its impressive height. It holds the distinction of being the tallest arched bridge in Khelvachauri municipality, standing 6.30 meters from the water level to its surface, and spanning 1.90 meters in width. The bridge was constructed at such a height due to the steep, rocky banks it needed to traverse.
The Chkheri Bridge features a horizontal surface, which is likely the result of a past renovation. The reconstruction may have been undertaken to accommodate vehicular traffic more easily. Today, a modern bridge has been built atop the original structure, blending the old with the new.
