Tskhemlara Antient Arched Bridge
Tskhemlara Antient Arched Bridge
As you journey along the Machakhela road in Khelvachauri Municipality, you'll have the chance to explore an ancient arched bridge that stands as a testament to the region's rich cultural heritage.
The municipalities of Ajara are home to numerous arched bridges, each with its own story to tell. The Tskhemlara Arched Bridge, nestled in the village of Tskhemlara in Khelvachauri Municipality, is one such treasure. Spanning the Machakhela River, this medieval bridge is built in a narrow spot, with a 19.6-meter length between its piers and a height of 5.55 meters from the surface.
While arched bridges often bear similarities to one another, the Tskhemlara Arched Bridge stands out due to its unique arrangement of stones, large span, and low height. This bridge served as a vital connection for the village population until the 1960s.
In recognition of its cultural significance, the Tskhemlara Arched Bridge was designated an immovable cultural monument of national significance in 2006. Subsequently, restoration efforts were undertaken in 2008 to preserve the bridge.
