Otolta Fortress
Otolta Fortress
Located in Shuakhevi Municipality, Otholta Castle is a significant cultural heritage site, nestled at the confluence of the Chvanistskali River and its right tributary, Otoltatskali, at the top of the Archangel’s hill. The castle's vantage point offers stunning views of the surrounding landscapes. As with other fortresses, Otholta Castle played a crucial role in defending the Ajaristskali valley.
Initially believed to have been constructed in the 11th-12th centuries, like many other castles, archaeological excavations revealed that Otolta Castle's origins likely date back to the 5th-4th centuries BC. Excavations unearthed numerous artifacts, including large kvevris, jugs, pots, cups, jars, disc-shaped objects, pottery samples, and glazed pottery fragments.
In addition to these finds, water reservoirs were discovered nearby, which served to supply water to Otolta Fortress.
