Saghoreti Fortress
Saghoreti Fortress
Saghoreti fortress, located in the village of First May within Keda Municipality, is another fascinating tourist destination in Ajara. Perched on the right bank of the Ajaristskali River, this impressive fortress was built to control the surrounding roads, much like other forts in the region. Its strategic position atop high rocks allowed for complete oversight of the routes below.
Dating back to the 12th-13th centuries, Saghoreti Fortress is accessible via a single route from the northeast side. The fortress covers an area of 200 square meters, but sadly, only parts of the tower and an oval-shaped wall remain intact today, standing at a height of 2.10 meters. In the tower's western section, three pits were discovered, suggesting that additional floors may have once existed. Over time, the interior of Saghoreti Castle has become filled with earth and debris, offering a glimpse into its storied past.
