Batumi Archaeological Museum
If you're a history buff or just curious about ancient artifacts, the Batumi Archaeological Museum is the perfect spot to dive into Georgia's past and the vibrant history of the Ajara region. Showcased in the museum's exhibition halls are an array of artifacts from the Stone, Bronze, and Iron Ages, as well as Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, and late medieval periods. These historical treasures have been unearthed through archaeological excavations in various locations across South-West Georgia, such as Kobuleti, Tzkurauri, Tsikhisdziri, Gonio-Apsaros, and the Achariskalli valley, among others.
The oldest stone tools displayed in the museum were discovered near the Beshumi resort, dating back an astounding 300-400 thousand years.
In addition, the museum houses an impressive collection of numismatic and glyptic monuments crafted from gold, silver, bronze, and iron. Exquisite examples of Kolkhi goldsmithing hold a special place within the museum's exhibits.
Since 2004, the old building where the museum is located has been marked as a special cultural heritage site. This shows how important it is for keeping the area's history alive.
